THE TRUTH ABOUT BODY POSITIVITY - ASHLEY MCINROE

Body positivity is a tough game yo; regardless of where you stand on the scale.

There are endless body types, advised preferences for appearance and social presentation so whether it be in relation to skin tone, hair colour, eyes, lips, height and of course body fat even beginning to navigate the minefield can present all it’s own terrors.

That’s an understatement right? Cue the eye roll, of course it is. Working within the BOPO community I find myself regularly feeling that looming obligation to love myself always and in all ways and I don’t need to be the one to tell you how exhausting that thought is in itself. As someone who has struggled with body image my entire life I find it unbelievably frustrating, just because you know how to be body positive doesn’t necessarily mean that in every waking moment you’re going to feel that way.

Having lost an incredible 79.5kgs (which is only 2.5kg less than my current weight) it feels like in many ways like I’ve lost an entire other person and with it a mindset that didn’t support itself, fueled herself with unhealthy addictions, foods, relationships and behaviours. After years of hard work and dedication I’ve finally begun to find myself in amongst it all, ready and willing for a rebirth of epic proportions, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t still have bad days and low points.

One of my favourite sayings of all time is “life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans” and it couldn’t be more true sometimes, no matter how hard we work towards the light the universe has a funny way of teaching us lessons using rather unsavoury methods; I promise that the results of those methods will lead you straight to your strength if you take a breath, really trust the process, and never forget to lean on the incredible supportive community we have been blessed with.

We aren’t able to turn off those feelings sometimes and remembering that you have every right to falter can be just what you need to regain your balance.

I told you it wasn’t an easy win but I will tell you this, when it comes to fashion there’s no one correct way to dress for your size, wear what brings you joy and tell anyone who disagrees with you to look elsewhere and I promise you it’ll be the best look you’ve ever worn.
